What is involved:

  • The Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program is one of two distinct components of PADI’s Instructor Development Course (IDC)—the core of PADI Instructor training. The first portion is the Assistant Instructor course followed by the Open Water Scuba Instructor program. The OWSI program is a minimum of four days.
  • It introduces you to the entire PADI System of diver education and concentrates on further developing your abilities as a professional dive educator.

    • PADI Instructor Development Crew Pack ($697 + GST)

Course Duration: Evening Orientation + 7 full days

  • 4 sided slate or u/w note book (preferred)
  • Mask
  • Snorkel
  • Open heel fins
  • Dive boots
  • Knife or cutting device
  • Exposure suit (7mm or drysuit)

To take this course, you must be:

  • Be certified as a PADI Divemaster or hold a leadership level certification with another recreational diver training organisation
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement for a diving medical examination conducted within the past 12 months
  • Have been a certified diver for at least six months and have completed and logged at least 60 open water scuba dives (as documented in the individual’s log book) and have documentation of experience in deep, night and navigation diving
  • Submit proof of CPR and first aid training within the last 24 months
  • Submit documentation of any qualifying certification for entry level, advanced, rescue and leadership-level issued by another recreational diver training organization (PADI Members who have these records on file at PADI do not need to resubmit)
  • If not a PADI Divemaster, successfully complete the PADI Divemaster course diver rescue skills assessment

Course Structure:

The fun part of instructor training is interacting with course participants while creating friendships that continue long after the course concludes. You’ll begin networking with other professionals and begin to explore PADI Pro Diving Jobs worldwide. You’ll also have the opportunity to continue your professional education by participating in specialty instructor courses, which train you to teach specialties after instructor certification.

Classroom: General Standards and Procedures, Open Water Diver Course
Classroom: Teaching in Confined Water, Developing Knowledge Development Presentations

Day Two
Pool: Skill Demonstration Workshop, Confined Water Teaching Presentation 1
Classroom: Adventures in Diving Program, Conducting Open Water Dives, Risk Management

Day Three
Ocean: Open Water Teaching Presentation 1, Discover Scuba Diver Workshop, Adventure Diver Workshop
Classroom: Knowledge Development Teaching Presentation 1, 4 Es Counseling Workshop 1, Rescue Diver Course
Day Four
Ocean: Open Water Teaching Presentation 2, Rescue Diver Workshop , 800 metre Snorkel Swim
Pool and Classroom: Confined Water Teaching Presentations 2 and 3, Knowledge Development Teaching Presentation 2
Day Five
Pool and Classroom: Confined Water Teaching Presentation 4, Divemaster Course
Classroom: Knowledge Development Teaching Presentation 3, 4 Es Counseling Workshop 2
Day Six
Classroom, Pool and/or Ocean: Any remaining in-water activities, IE Orientation
Classroom: EFR Instructor Course
